Taking a ride on the Colebrookdale Railroad was a fill-in activity, but it turned out to be, probably, the most unexpected pleasure of our trip to Pennsylvania. The short line out of Boyertown has been around for a while, but only in the tourist passenger business for less than ten years. I’d seen pictures and thought it was a bit “Barbie princess, fairytale-like.” Boy, was I mistaken! The railroad is privately owned by a meticulous person with an eye for accuracy and authentic detail. The grounds were immaculate and pristinely kept. The railroad cars are 1920s-era steel, but back-dated to 1890s Victorian splendor – fine-comb researched and executed. Incredible! This fella has spent a LOT of money; I have shopped for historic light fixtures before, and know those pendants in our lounge car must cost!. The gilded mahogany was breathtaking. THIS is what a dinner train ought to be. No box lunch here. Baked ziti with meatballs, chicken parmesan, salad w/ vinaigrette, garlic rolls, coffee, tea, and cheesecake, all expertly done and delicious. The serviceware was gold-rimmed china; the staff even greeted us with a receiving line at the door, decked out complete with braided shoulder boards. The train was incredible. The parlor car was dark, but had a baby grand piano inside. We sat in one of two lounge cars. There was a sleeper and coach and diner behind us. The Colebrookdale has two steam locomotives awaiting restoration, and they also have the ex-BRW motorcar, now beautifully painted in blue, navy, black, and cream. Keep watching this little railroad for amazing things. Many tourist railroads offer highly-decorated first-class car rides, but I don’t know of another that does things like this. I felt like a guest of the Carnegies or Vanderbilts. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!
